Sonia Asghar, hailing from Nawabshah, grew up facing isolation, bullying, and financial hardship. Born deaf in a family of seven daughters, her story has been one of trial and triumph. During her childhood, she was subjected to punishment and derogatory remarks from her teachers and classmates due to being different. Her family’s financial struggles made Sonia work in the fields picking cotton and cutting rice to make ends meet.
Sonia struggled to be heard until her life changed when she enrolled in Deaf Reach school. For the first time in her life, she felt like she belonged. She learned sign language, completed her education, and became a teacher at the very school that supported her and gave her hope. Today, she is the sole breadwinner for her family, proving that when women are given the opportunity, they don’t just survive, they thrive.
Sonia embodies perseverance, hope, and transformation. Her journey of resilience from a silenced girl to an empowered woman is inspirational.
Thousands of deaf women still face barriers to education, employment, and social acceptance in Pakistan. Let’s create a world where every woman, regardless of her ability, has the chance to learn and succeed.
